It Helps You See The Bigger Picture
The bigger picture is defined as “the most important facts about a situation and the effects of that situation on other things”
Sometimes, due to the hectic nature of our lives, we lose sight of the bigger picture. The most important details about a situation, can get lost in a sea of other, inconsequential elements, leaving us with information overload, that obscures our view of the really important things.
We can also, at times, fail to fully consider the effect our current actions might have on others, missing the interconnected nature of all things.
How it works
- Due to the hectic nature of our lives, we lose sight of the bigger picture.
- Meditation is a useful method for pulling ourselves out of the confusion and information overload, and allowing us to see the situation as a whole, from a distant viewpoint.
- Next time you need to see the bigger picture, try meditating and letting your mind step back from the situation. See all of the details before you and choose which are important and which you can ignore for now.
Meditation is a useful method for pulling ourselves out of the confusion and information overload, and allowing us to see the situation as a whole, from a distant viewpoint. Imagine going to an art gallery and pressing your nose up against a painting that’s 6 feet tall and 10 feet wide. All you would see is the tiny area right in front of your eyes and your opinions would be formed from that perspective. Now imagine you step back 10 feet; suddenly, your entire perspective has changed and you can see the bigger picture, allowing to formulate an opinion on the bigger picture, as you can now see how it all comes together as a whole.
With meditation, we can do the same exercise with our thoughts and the information in our minds. Meditating on the bigger picture, let’s you ignore the inconsequential information and allows you to focus on the important facts of a given situation. Once your mind has narrowed down the important facts, you can then start to see how things will unfold, given certain actions you make. You can mentally do a run through of different scenarios of how things may turn out if you take action a, b or c.
So, the next time you need to see the bigger picture, try meditating and letting your mind step back from the situation. See all of the details before you and choose which are important and which you can ignore for now. Focus on the important facts, understand them and then imagine what different outcomes may arise from the choices you make.
Like the art gallery analogy, things can look very different, depending on how and where you view them from.
